If you are aware of a client who is feeling alone and stressed, and who is struggling with an abusive relationship and/or building hope in recovery from addiction, Peer Helpers can help.
The Peer Helpers Project can provide peer outreach and support to older adults affected by alcohol, prescription and non-prescription medication misuse and abuse, problem gambling and elder abuse.
A number of older adults have completed an intensive training program including peer helping components, elder abuse, substance dependency and recovery information, healthy aging and communication skills development. These Peer Helpers are currently available to be matched with individuals requesting support.
With understanding, compassion and training, Peer Helpers can provide:
- one-on-one support, companionship and empathetic listening
- personal wisdom from their own life experience
- information on obtaining help and other resources
Peer Helping is a supportive, one-on-one relationship; Peer Helpers are not counsellors. Peer Helpers receive regular supervision and support and have completed a Criminal Record Search.
Who is a good candidate for Peer Helping?
Good candidates for Peer Helping include individuals, ages 55+, who are currently coping with one or more of the issues outlined above.
Agency referral criteria:
- an appropriate referral will be an older adult who is beyond crisis stage and actively working toward recovery and healing
- the older adult should also be actively interested in seeking the support of a volunteer Peer Helper
- the referral agent is expected to work in cooperation with the Program Coordinator to provide feedback as to the progress of the Peer Helping match
- Peer support is intended to be a complement to on-going self-help and professional services
